Shedding a Light on USPS Service Performance

Date: 06/14/21 | Category: Delivery & Collection

You probably have heard a lot recently about the pandemic and other issues causing problems with mail delivery, with some people saying it takes weeks for packages and letters to arrive. Maybe you even experienced problems yourself. Maybe you’ve been getting your mail on time and wondering what all the complaints are about.

Did you ever wish you could get a better understanding of how the Postal Service is doing across the country? Well, now you can. We recently launched a new service performance webpage that includes an interactive map displaying quarterly data on the Postal Service’s service performance around the country.

You can filter the data by time period, geography, mail class, or service standard. Want to see on-time performance for presorted First-Class Mail that is supposed to be delivered in two days? You can. Maybe you’re interested in focusing on Marketing Mail in New York? You can filter the map to see that also.

We will continue to update this page quarterly as the Postal Service releases new data. The interactive map is not all the website features; it also functions as a one-stop-shop for all the OIG’s published and upcoming work on service performance. So, take a look and tell us what you think

Same situation going on since Dec 20th. If you look at the tracking map it will crack you up! What. A JOKE.

Exactly! And it is asked why the USPS is having money issues. Mail/packages should be sorted by zip code then sent to the proper station the first time out and not shipped to different places only to go back to the original. UPS and Fed Ex aren't any better.

I totally agree! Lazy, incompetent, way overpaid, and get lazier by the moment. Packages go in circles for days on end. Had a prescription coming from Wilkes-Barre, PA to upstate NY and it floated around Syracuse for days and days Finally received it after I begged the drugstore for a few (thyroid meds) to hold me over. Now it's happening again with another package - it's been floating around Syracuse for days! Fire the entire staff and buy some ponies!!!

Carriers, mail handlers, clerks, MVS, custodial etc...we don't receive tax payers money. The direct revenue the Postal Service receive is through packages, stamps, passports, p.o boxes, express mail. Get your facts together before you post something.

A small package sent to me before Christmas has been sitting in some PO facility 25 miles from my home since Decenber 29. This is totally unacceptable dereliction of duty. The Postal Service is a disgrace to any putative First World nation. It is time for a wholesale reboot of the failed system. (Even worse, the package, according to USPS tracking arrived at the SAME above location a week after it was mailed, THEN got sent 250 miles away, sat for a day then came BACK to the 25 mile distant location. Whoever arranges for this idiocy needs to be canned NOW. _)

I had a package mailed from Illinois to Colorado. It took about a week to arrive at the Denver facility which was only about an hour away from our house. It sat there for a few days then instead of it being delivered to our address, it was sent to Hawaii! Lol I am honestly starting to think this nonsense is being done intentionally. I just don't get how any of this makes any sense. Something else is going on.

It is no fault of the majority of USPS employees their organization has steadily decreased in inefficiency, delivery, and customer service. In the last year we have seen the effects of placing an unfit and inexperienced postmaster general in charge...whose goal (along with Trump) was to destroy the postal service in order to privatize it...and with the destruction of mail sorting machines [that are assembled and configured by hand at each location], reduction of staff, and a decreasing budget, it is a recipe for calamity. When I’ve been able to get a postal employee on the phone—even as far away as Nashua, NH (I live in San Diego)—every person has been professional, considerate, and very helpful. The usps in the 80s and 90s has steadily been attacked and defunded to the point where it’s reliabilty will drive it out of business...much like public transportation.

So which is it? Is it Trump's fault or the 70's and 80's?
Excuses, excuses. Is it going to take people dying, like at the VA, while managers committed fraud so they could get bonuses?
Or will it be disbanded like Mass. State Police Troop E, where 29 troopers and management systematically stole $millions from taxpayers by submitting fake traffic tickets and false time sheets?
There is not now, nor has there ever been a government agency that wasn't rife with waste, fraud, corruption, and incompetence.
The USPS is just the latest under scrutiny because it has gotten so bad.
It SHOULD be privatized because it has proven that it is an incompetent, inefficient waste of taxpayer's money. And before you say it-No, it isn't self-sufficient. It takes $millions from taxpayers every year.
How can an agency be so bad, but everybody who works there gets a taxpayer-funded lifetime pension after working only 20 years?
How is that justified?!
I never understood trying to justify the unjustifiable.

One major issue with USPS is that for the last 20 years republicans have been trying to put it out of business and installing the idiot that heads it now was just their latest ploy. Republicans want everything private so their owners can make money from it. They have been attacking the post office and public schools for years to try to get rid of them. They ruin the service on purpose then say "look at how badly run this is".

Performance standards getting mail to last the mile ,delivery office. What about performance standards for carriers who do the last mile. What's more important provide good customer service or be harass by management to cut corners, run like hell if not end up like the hundreds of thousands of CCA carriers who have been fired or quit because of the hostile work environment. Why do supervisors get bonus for keeping manpower hrs down. What's more important performance bonus for management or service? Falsify scans to stop the clock on parcels to keep up with performance , falsifying clock rings, delete clock rings to save on labor cost. Inspector General try re writing the report and maybe you will stumble into the truth. Customers are paying for service not performance .

If “private is always better,” we’re not feeling it in Fairbanks, Alaska. Contractors have an obligation to meet the contract terms, or at least attempt to do so in good faith. When that obligation is ignored, it’s time to sever the contract and find someone who takes their obligation seriously. Such is the case with our contract mail delivery service.
We have a great neighborhood. It’s a little quirky, but very welcoming. We seem to get a new mail carrier every few years, and it takes time to learn the route. When that happens, there is usually some initial confusion which provides another opportunity to meet our neighbors in line at the Airport Post Office or walking the misdelivered mail down the street to the correct recipient. We understand this and take the time to let the new carrier know that they are appreciated, and that we have confidence that they will learn the route. The circumstance generally provides a laugh and a reminder that we love our quirky neighborhood. We are well past that with our new mail contractor.
An interesting thing happens when neighbors get to spend several hours a week in line together. We compare notes. This week, the stories were the same: “I got another notice of attempted delivery, but I was home, can see my mailbox, and there was no attempt.” “I know I don’t have a slip, but no slip was ever left in the mailbox, and the MyUSPS notice says I have to pick it up before it gets sent back.” “This would have fit in my mailbox.” “Here is a photo of my mailbox/driveway, it’s so clear and accessible you could get a semi in there.” And, “I can only take so much time off work to come down here for this.”
If the carrier isn’t going to deliver packages, they need to be honest about this. Bid the contract that way, and leave our packages where we can pick them up. At what point does it become mail tampering when our packages are held hostage in a car for up to a week? At what point does it become fraud to falsely claim “attempted” deliveries?
That said, a thank you is owed to the fantastic and consistent staff at the Airport Post Office. In the decade I have been using this branch, the staff have consistently remained helpful, knowledgeable, courteous, and conscientious. You are a pleasure to see, even if I would like to be seeing less of you…
If this carrier was an employee, they could receive further training/instruction, or be disciplined/replaced. Since this is a contractor, the only apparent solution seems to be terminating the contract on the basis of failure to meet the contract specifications, or worse, fraud.

It is time to stop blaming the pandemic for incompetent service. Two years should be long enough to adapt. I have been waiting for an important 1st class package for almost two weeks. First the scale where sent was off and package returned to sender for insufficient postage. It was resent with expected delivery to be on Jan 7. Last night it showed en route to destination from KC. Today, Jan 9, it still didnt show up at the destination. This is actually a health product that is very much needed. I see no excuse for the incompetence. I worked many years for the usps when we actually had large volumes of mail, yet managed to provide a valuable service. We took pride in our jobs. For the life of me I cant see any reason why it takes over a week to receive first class mail that was supposedly on the truck to my post office from Kansas City the small rural town of Licking MO. Granted we got half an inch of snow 2 days ago but the roads are dry. Why has service gone down hill so badly? People are starting to be Ok with higher prices if they receive the service. Not so much when we don't.
Thank You.

The USPS lost 50% of the packages I shipped in the past years. They are a horrible company and their process for filing claims DOES NOT WORK.

The USPS has nosedived down to one of the least reliable companies in business today. It's no wonder there are phrases like 'gone postal'. If I worked for such an abominable company, I'd go postal too! Stick to letters, USPS. Leave the parcels to Fedex and UPS. You can't handle that business.

The postal service in Huntington WV is a joke!!! Our rural carrier is a postal employee driving a postal Jeep and takes as long as 30 minutes to deliver to 5 families on a 500’ long road. He parks in the middle of the a single lane road and talks to women instead of doing his job. Today, 1/6/22 my packages and mail were not delivered due to my driveway or front door being inaccessible, that’s bullshit and I have pics to prove it, only thing was slushy road and cold and they didn’t want to work….as usual. I’ll be contacting my elected reps and voting to decrease the postal budget, why pay for something we don’t get…..btw, the local newspaper delivery carrier had no problem delivering to my road earlier in the wee hours of the morning and he doesn’t have a multi billion dollar budget!!! Again, the postal service isn’t even answering the phones in Huntington, why do we expect them to deliver mail?

The problem with the usps is it’s run by a union ….meaning no one can get fired no matter what they do! So you have thousands of stupid people making 60k plus a year and because they can’t be fired they have no drive or ambition to work hard. I know what I am speaking of …my relatives work for the usps and they constantly call in sick or work half days…they laugh all the time about it.

the problem is that it's owned and operated by the government so they can't go out of business. A private company with union labor would have gone belly up by now.

Where to begin.. I’m fed up with the postal service and their lack of ability to get anything right. I’m so sick of purchasing something and then watching it sit in a location with no updates for days and days. And then get an update only to see that the item has arrived at my local Post Office and then been sent 45 miles up the road for no reason. My current package has been in transit in the USPS for 11 days and I still have no idea when I will receive it due to their lack of being able to provide relevant tracking updates. I’m sure this is just a waste of time. My opinion won’t effect the process… nothing will improve. All I can do is request UPS or FedEx shipping in the future. Thanks for nothing.

I have had issues with post office delivery for the 16 years I have lived at my address. When I file compliant it goes back to our postmaster. She actually tells me they know about the issues and they are watching. FOR 16 YEARS!!!!!!! I have had late bills and had fees and my credit hurt but today was the last straw! I had a disconnection! Why should I have to put a reminder to check for a bill when I know the company sends it! I have to pay a processing fee to go paperless and pay online so instead of paying a first-class stamp I now pay more. Just get rid of the post office altogether, then I would not have to play postman and deliver all the mail that is placed in my mailbox...at least I am honest with integrity, obviously, others are not!

USPS is unreliable, stupid, Pricks, & scum all in one! it is ridiculous how lazy and selfish they can be with mail and packages a package arriving really late with three stickers on it saying its been sent to 3 different wrong addresses! North Lewisburg Ohio, Palmyra Pennsylvania, and Annville Pennsylvania before they could get it right in Lebanon Pennsylvania!! how idiotic can you be when it says Lebanon PA on the Address form! Every time i order something online whether its Amazon or Walmart idk if it will be shipped by UPS, FEDEX, OR USPS it does not say when you place the order it only says it when they are preparing, so that is really non exciting there!

Totally agree, they say they need help and I applied SEVEN times, I have two undergraduate degrees and a master's; so education should not be an issue. I have taken the test at least 3 times and have no police record. Oh, and a clean driving record. Not even an interview. I know that I can at least get the mail in the right mailbox!
